§ 14-1. Chief of police.

  • (a)

    Head of department. The chief of police is designated the head of the town's police department, as the term is used in G.S. section 160A-288, and is delegated the authority to make or grant requests pursuant to this statute.

    (b)

    Entering into agreements. In accordance with the provisions of G.S. section 160A-288, the police chief is authorized to enter into agreements for exchanging law enforcement officers, equipment or supplies.

    (c)

    Administration of department. The chief of police, subject to the direction of the town manager, shall have charge of the police force. He shall assign such duties to the police officers as he thinks best for the good order of the town, and he shall be responsible to the town manager in seeing to it that the police officers faithfully perform their duties.

    (d)

    Duties generally. It shall be the duty of the chief of police to:

    (1)

    Supervise the police department;

    (2)

    When directed by the town manager, organize, train and supervise an auxiliary or reserve police department made up of volunteer members;

    (3)

    Preserve the peace by suppressing all disturbances and by apprehending all offenders;

    (4)

    Assign such duties to the police officers as he deems best for the welfare of the town;

    (5)

    Carry out such further duties as may be assigned to him by the town manager.
